We are lucky to have two excellent native english speaking teachers  who work with our bilingual children in the classroom – Sophie Ferrier and Judith Morisset. They work together and to ensure that all children develop and progress over the next school year.

The aim of these classses is for english-speaking children to retain and extend their English skills through fun, interesting and motivating activities.

The Grande Section children meet twice a week for 45 minutes.

Each week we read and discuss at least one book, building on vocabulary and sentence structure as well as encouraging students to listen to and share with their peers. Throughout the year we build the foundations for CP. We explore all of the letters of the alphabet through songs, activities, worksheets and pictures. Other topics involve the days of the week, months of the year, seasons, numbers, shapes and of course English and American culture.

The classes of CP and CE1 have one hour of english per week during school hours and one extra hour on a Tuesday or Thursday after school at 3.45pm.

Activities in CP allow children to expand their knowledge of the English language through exploring and discovering new stories. The first term we concentrate on giving the children a passion for storybooks and storytelling. From the second term we introduce Jolly Phonics.

Jolly Phonics is a thorough foundation for reading and writing. It teaches the letter sounds in an enjoyable, multisensory way and enables children to use them to read and write words. If you would like to find more about Jolly Phonics

CE1 activities allow your child to continue the Jolly Phonics programme.  We will encourage them to extend their vocabulary, exploring the meaning and sounds of new words. They will read more challenging texts, compose and write simple sentences and listen with enjoyment to stories, songs, rhymes and poems.

CE2, CM1 and CM2 have two hours per week during school hours.

From CE2 english activities use the English National Curriculum, at Key Stage 2, as a guideline.

Lessons are shared between two study areas :

  • spelling and language structure
  • theme work

Both areas include "Speaking and Listening", "Reading and Comprehension" and "Writing" skills.
Children work either individually, in pairs or as a whole group depending on the activity.

The spelling and grammar activities are set according to the child's level in English. The themed work includes a varied range of texts, fiction (poems, stories, playscripts, etc) and non-fiction (diaries, autobiographies, letters, information texts, etc).
